PHOTO WORKSHOP - Coastal Redwoods

with George Stocking
May 28 - June 1, 2008
Cost: $1,825

Journey to the primeval forests of Northern California on a trip timed to coincide with the rhododendron and coastal wildflower bloom. Morning visits will take us into the massive redwood forests, where coastal fog drifts in and out between the ghostly behemoths, revealing and then enveloping the bright pink rhododendrons at their feet. Walking through the forest at these times conveys an unmatched sense of serenity and calm. Afternoons will be spent photographing lupine, ice plants and other wildflowers on the rocky bluffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

There will also be an outing to scenic Crescent City Lighthouse, accessible only at low tide, as well as one day spent exploring the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area and Bandon Beach, Oregon. Bandon is known for it's large concentration of rugged seastacks and rocky headlands that protrude from crashing surf.  George Stocking knows and loves this area, and is excited by the opportunity to share it with his students.

Day One

  • The trip will begin in Crescent City, California, where our initial shoot will take advantage of the morning coastal fog in Del Norte State Park to capture the rhododendron bloom.
  • After lunch back in Crescent City and an image critique, we'll head over to the Pacific Coast for the coastal wildflower bloom and for sunset.

Day Two

  • In the morning, we'll photograph rhododendron and redwoods in Jedediah Smith State Park.
  • Immediately after lunch we'll photograph tide pools along the coast.
  • Sunset at Crescent City Lighthouse should be a spectacular way to finish the day.

Day Three

  • After breakfast, we'll follow the morning fog into the redwood forest of Del Norte State Park.
  • Sunset over the Pacific will be the last shoot of the day.

Day Four

  • We'll catch the morning fog and flowers of Prairie Creek Redwoods, then it's a drive up the Oregon Coast to photograph the fabulous sea stacks of Bandon at sunset.

Day Five

  • After a sunrise near Bandon, we'll spend the morning photographing the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area, which sport their own rhododendron bloom.
  • Then it’s back to Crescent City for sunset along the Pacific and a farewell dinner.

  • A number of sites about Bandon feature fine photography from the area.  Go to your favorite search engine and type in "bandon seastacks photo" or some other appropriate combination and you'll be able to see what the area offers.

Safety comment: Never turn your back on the ocean and also be careful climbing on the hillsides!
